Taking Counter-Drone Systems to the Skies

Sensofusion has completed a strategic acquisition by purchasing the Finnish aircraft manufacturer Atol Aviation

With this deal, Sensofusion expands its resources and brings to market a new generation of air-to-ground surveillance solutions, which will be manufactured at the company’s Halli factory in Finland.

Sensofusion, a fast-growing defense technology firm, has acquired Atol Aviation, the largest aircraft manufacturer in Finland. The acquisition integrates aircraft manufacturing expertise and production capacity into Sensofusion, further enhancing the company’s ability to conduct air-to-ground sensor reconnaissance.

Atol Aviation operates in Halli at a former Finnish Air Force base. There, the company has developed the Atol Aurora amphibious aircraft as well as the Atol Protector, a model designed specifically for governmental and defense use.

Aerial drone detection covers a significantly wider area than systems operated from the ground. When terrain, forests, and buildings do not obstruct signal paths, a sensor system mounted on an aircraft multiplies the size of the monitored area. This represents a major leap in capability, particularly for large-area surveillance and rapidly changing operational environments.

Sensofusion plans to launch the production of new products at the Halli factory, expand operations, and hire additional staff. These new products will be officially unveiled at an event held in Halli on June 3, 2026.

“Air-to-ground operations have been familiar to Sensofusion for years. Many of our Airfence customers have already deployed our products on helicopters, airplanes, and UAVs. Signal dominance cannot be achieved from the ground alone; furthermore, ground-based radio transmitters are detected much more effectively from the air,” says Tuomas Rasila, founder and CEO of Sensofusion.

“This is a great step forward for Atol Aviation. With Sensofusion, we share a genuine synergy of expertise and execution. Both companies design and manufacture sophisticated products using Finnish engineering excellence,” says Anssi Rekula, founder and CEO of Atol Aviation.
